3 Tips For Making Your Writing More Concise

Posted by

When writing for an online audience, be it on Twitter or other social platforms, one thing you should be aiming for with your content is brevity. The more concise you can be with the content you’re creating, the easier it will be for people to read, interact with, and remember. However, writing in a concise manner is something that many people struggle with, especially if you feel like you are always trying to sell all of the benefits of something in order to close a sale.

Luckily, there are a few tricks that you can try to help make your writing more on the brief yet impactful side. To help you see how this can be done, here are three tips for making your writing more concise.

Write In A Straightforward Fashion

One thing that can make all writing longer and more meandering is when you’re not straightforward. If you’re trying to hide something or convince people of a specific point, you’ll often find that you add more and more words to help you do this. But if you’re wanting to be concise, what you should really be focusing on is the most important words or facts that will create the greatest impact for your reader.

Especially when it comes to things like Twitter or other short-form content, what you want to do is give your audience enough so that they are interested in going to your website or other content that can expound more on a concept. But for the sake of being concise, you’ll want to be as straightforward as possible

Switch Out Phrase For Words

Something else that can make your content more rambling is when you take the long way to get to a point that could have been made in fewer words.

To see if this is something that you can improve upon in your writing, try to uncover where you’re using phrases that could easily be switched out for just a word. For example, rather than saying that someone “gave an assessment” of something, you can say that they “assessed” something. This can help to cut down on a lot of bloat in the content you write.

Edit Like A Journalist

Professional writers have to do a lot of editing. Especially if they are a journalist, their writing needs to be formatted in such a way that the most important content is shared first and given priority. Then, as the piece goes on, the less important details can be added. So if you’re wanting to make your writing more concise, think about yourself as if you were a journalist needing to give the most important information first and removing any words or phrases that don’t immediately add to what you’re trying to create.

If you’re looking to make your writing more concise, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you see how this can be done.
