Between 2010 and 2020, corrosion alone caused 295 reported incidents at U.S. oil and biofuel pipelines. That's more than any other single cause. The number usually gets filed under "safety," and it belongs there. But it's also a sustainability number, and the industry is starting to talk about it that way.
Every one of those 295 incidents is a release into soil, water, or air. Every avoided incident is a spill that didn't happen, a cleanup nobody had to run, and a stretch of pipe that keeps working instead of getting cut out and hauled away. Frame integrity that way and the maintenance program stops looking like a cost center. It starts looking like the most concrete environmental lever an operator actually controls.
The 295 Number Is a Sustainability Number
A pipeline failure is rarely only a leak. It's often a hazardous-liquid release, a soil excavation, a water-body response, and a remediation tail measured in years. When corrosion is the underlying cause, the failure was almost always preventable. The metal was thinning for a long time before anything ruptured.
So the 295 figure is really two numbers stacked on top of each other: a safety count, and an inventory of avoidable environmental damage.
That framing changes how a sustainability team should read a corrosion report. Read it as an emissions and contamination forecast, because that's what it is.
Corrosion Is Expensive Long Before It's Ever a Spill
The financial case tracks the environmental one closely. Corrosion damages assets constantly, whether or not it ever produces a headline event, and the cost of that slow damage is enormous compared with the cost of controlling it.
That's why so much of the pipeline sustainability conversation is really a conversation about prevention chemistry, inspection cadence, and material choices. The same midstream practices that keep the 295 count from becoming 296.
Regulators Already Treat Integrity as an Environmental Program
Federal rulemaking has moved in the same direction. The 2022 PHMSA gas transmission rule tightened repair criteria, expanded integrity management, and added requirements around cathodic protection and inspections after extreme weather. It was written as a safety rule. Read it beside the methane picture and it reads as an environmental rule too.
Methane is where safety and sustainability collapse into the same problem. A small, slow leak on a gas transmission line doesn't set off a public incident, but it releases a greenhouse gas many times more potent than carbon dioxide over a twenty-year window. The integrity program that finds and fixes that leak is doing climate work whether or not anyone calls it that.
What Actually Moves the 295 Number Down
The unglamorous truth is that a handful of well-run practices do most of the work, and none of them are new. What's changing is the willingness to fund them at the level the environmental case now justifies.
Integrity Belongs on the ESG Page, Not Just the Ops Report
Most midstream operators already report incident rates, inspection miles, and spill volumes. Fewer connect those numbers to their sustainability disclosures, even though the linkage is direct. A ton of product that stays inside the pipe is a ton that didn't reach soil, water, or atmosphere. That's the cleanest environmental metric an operator has, and it's already being measured.
The reframing matters for capital decisions too. When an inhibitor program or an ILI run competes for budget only against other maintenance line items, it often loses. When it competes as an emissions reduction and a spill-avoidance investment, with the same weight a solar PPA or a fleet electrification project gets, the math looks different. Prevention starts winning the arguments it should have been winning all along.
The Shift Worth Paying Attention To
None of this requires the industry to rebrand. It requires operators, regulators, and investors to notice that the work already being done under "integrity" is doing double duty. Fewer failures. Fewer releases.
Less methane. Less remediation. The 295 number goes down, and the environmental footprint attached to it goes down with it.
Pipelines aren't going to stop being a safety story. They're finally becoming a sustainability one as well, and the operators who see that first are the ones whose integrity programs will look, in a few years, like they were ahead of the curve.
