What is Twitter and why does it keep following me around?


Twitter Explained

Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service that allows you answer the question, "What are you doing?" by sending short text messages 140 characters in length, called "tweets", to your friends, or "followers."

The short format of the tweet is a defining characteristic of the service, allowing informal collaboration and quick information sharing that provides relief from rising email and IM fatigue. Twittering is also a less gated method of communication: you can share information with people that you wouldn't normally exchange email or IM messages with, opening up your circle of contacts to an ever-growing community of like-minded people.

You can send your messages using the Twitter website directly, as a single SMS alert, or via a third-party application such as Twirl, Snitter, or the Twitterfox add-on for Firefox. (See below for links to Twitter tools and applications.)

Your tweets are displayed on your profile page, on the home page of each of your followers, and in the Twitter public timeline (unless you disable this in your account settings.)

You can receive tweets by visiting the Twitter website, IM, SMS, RSS, email or via a third-party application.

Getting Started

Visit the Twitter website and click "Join for free" to create your account. Consider using your real name as your user name to help your friends find you more easily.

Once your account is created, login and click "Settings." From here, you can setup your account details, manage your password, register your mobile phone and IM account, configure how you receive Notices, upload your photo and customize your account's design.

Your Twitter page is located at twitter.com/your-username

Sending Messages

You can "tweet" from your Twitter page, your mobile phone, IM account, or via a third-party Twitter client.

  • From your Twitter page: S imply enter a message in the text field at the top of the page and click "Update."
  • From your mobile phone: Send an SMS message to 40404.
  • From your IM account: Send a message to either twitter@twitter.com (Jabber/GTalk) or TwitterIM (AOL).

Your tweet will be displayed to your followers, either on their Twitter page, mobile phone, or any other way they are setup to receive Twitter updates.

Following Other Twitter Users

Finding and adding friends to your "Twitterverse" is easy.

  • From the Twitter website: Login to your account, visit your friends' Twitter pages and click "Follow" underneath their photo. If your friend's account is public, you will immediately start seeing their tweets on your page, otherwise your friend will need to approve you before you can see their updates.
  • From your mobile phone or IM account: Send the command follow username.

@Replies and Direct Messages

When you send a message with @username at the beginning, it's understood that your message is intended for that specific user, but all your followers can still see the tweet. Note that for the intended recipient to see your message on their home page, they must be following you, otherwise they will only see your message on the Replies tab.

To send a friend a private tweet, use the Direct command: d username message.

5 bosses reveal how they motivate their employees

Motivation is a term that may not have been used much in the workplace some years ago, but now it’s a huge talking point. More power is shifting to employees and it would be fair to say that the situation is a lot healthier than it ever has been.

For today’s post, we have spoken to multiple business owners and senior management who have tried to raise motivation levels in their organization. We haven’t been able to name names for obvious reasons, but the results are definitely worth a read.

Invest in people, not projects

OK, you probably also need to invest in projects, but the first business owner we turned to said that this was one of the biggest lessons she had ever learned.

To provide some context, she owns a public relations company that has between 25 and 30 staff at any given time. At first, her sole emphasis was about investing in projects, but something was missing. She quickly found out that employees were clockwatching, and had no real investment in projects.

Then, she turned a to a people-centered approach. She insisted that all managers within her team held weekly one-on-one sessions with their direct reports, whilst also making sure that every employee had a personal development plan. It’s resulted in plenty of internal promotions but perhaps surprisingly, her business turnover has grown by 33% since implementing this two years ago.

A smaller example focused on collaboration

Of course, the first example was quite radical. Some companies might be too big, or just don’t have the resources, to invest in each and every person like the above. Sure, it’s something that most would like to do, but in reality it’s difficult.

This is what we found out when we spoke to a small business owner in Manchester, UK. They owned a printing company, with just six employees on their books.

The nature of the business meant that constant employee development was difficult – they weren’t growing fast enough for this.

However, there was nothing stopping them getting more involved. The managing director said to us, “Just making people feel involved in projects has been the best thing for us. Every single person in our team collaborates, and this means that they feel invested. We’ve stuck with the same team for three years since going with this approach, so it seems to be working.”

“I banned meetings”

This was one of the more interesting conversations we had. This time, it was with a mortgage company who had 150 people employed with them, spread over multiple departments.

An employee satisfaction survey revealed that most were sick and tired of meetings. Most found that they just couldn’t get things done – and received the brunt of manager criticism because of this.

As such, the MD made a striking point to ban meetings. Sure, “there might be some extreme exceptions”, but overall meetings were banned. Instead, they were replaced by quick chats over a desk, and this has improved morale of employees significantly.

Goal setting is key

This was one of the least surprising examples for us, with one owner simply telling us that goal setting was key to their success.

This was a company who started out small, but expanded rapidly. It meant that they missed the corporate-appraisal style that a lot of big firms had. In doing this, most of their employees didn’t have goals.

Now, every single recruit is given annual goals. These can be split to be more granular depending on the manager, but the main rule is that these yearly goals have to both be set, and reviewed.

And some just rely on candy…

For this final example, we spoke to a manager of a HR consultancy company in London.

In this case, his advice was simple – he relied on candy. That’s right, there were no expensive tricks here, simply making sure that licorice candy and other favorites are readily available was his top tip.

He went on to say that he had experimented with more advanced methods, such as away days and even beer Friday, but when it came to the crunch most employees just wanted to feel “looked after” day-in-day out. Candy was his best way to do this.

Thanks to the social media model, brands and customers have much more of a connection. People follow their favorite brands on social media now and not just the influencers that they like. 

 

This gives brands an opportunity to create a loyalty like never before. By tapping into what the community on their social media pages thinks is important, they can craft products accordingly.

 

Consumers also have the chance to ask questions directly to the brand and get very fast responses. When brands have a personable approach with their consumers, then it creates more trust and can also increase their reach as people are more likely to share with their friends.

 

Brands have to be socially conscious

 

Where corporations previously felt little need to be good members of the community, they now get instant pressure to respond to topics they would normally stay far away from.

 

Social media has been instrumental in driving change through awareness of societal and cultural problems and followers expect brands to follow suit. As more people are becoming increasingly engaged in sustainability issues, they want to make sure their preferred brand is also on board. 

 

If their brand has not entered the conversation then consumers may feel the need to switch. Brands have responded by making more eco-friendly products and donating proceeds to environmental projects and groups. 

 

Creativity

 

Lastly, brands are free to be more creative with their messaging now. It can be more long form than it ever was on TV and radio.

 

And people are responding to this in a very positive way.
